Stop feeling guilty about broken resolutions—set inspiring goals instead!
Forget resolutions—they only make us feel guilty when we inevitably break them. For example, I’ve already:
- Eaten ice cream for dinner
- Skipped two exercise classes
- Ignored my closet-cleaning plans
Resolutions often focus on stopping something, which can feel negative and discouraging. Instead, I prefer setting GOALS. Goals are about starting something positive, bringing optimism, inspiration, and energy.
Over the years, I’ve developed a process to set meaningful goals, and I’d love to share it with you.
Step 1: Review the Year
Take some time to reflect on the past year. Grab a notebook and create columns for categories like Successes, Failures, Lessons, Gratitude, Disappointments, Supporters, and Detractors. Write freely—this is just for you. Acknowledging the negatives can help you let go and move forward.
Step 2: Set Goals
Focus on key areas like Career, Income, Relationships, and Health/Fitness. Create columns for 5 years, 1 year, and 6 months.
I do the 5-year FIRST, then consider “what do I have to have completed by one year, to reach the 5-year goal?”
This helps me to think of the “long game”.
While long-term planning can feel uncertain (hello, global pandemics!), breaking it into smaller, actionable steps helps.
Remember the S.M.A.R.T. rule: Goals should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound. Ask yourself, “How will I know when I’ve achieved this?”
This simple process can help you start the year with clarity and purpose.

Wishing you a happy and successful 2025!
